Country life at Roseville farm on the New England tablelands – between frost, fields, and figuring it out

Spring is Arriving at Roseville

It is incredible what just one week can do to a garden. Spring is arriving!

We left Roseville to head back to Sydney for a week and returned to discover that spring had well and truly decided to arrive while we were gone.

We came home to beautiful yellow daffodils appearing everywhere. Photos honestly don’t do it justice — the garden looked completely different.

Now the tulips are starting to pop up, the plum trees are flowering, the weeping cherries are beginning to bloom, and the peonies that we thankfully didn’t dig out are proving exactly why we should leave things that look dead over winter alone.

Next will come the irises.

One of the things I have loved most about being here is watching the garden change through the seasons.

I know I have said this before, but after spending winter looking at bare branches, sleeping garden beds and wondering what might appear when the weather finally warmed up, everything is now slowly starting to reveal itself.

But what makes it even more special is knowing that none of this happened by accident.

For years, Dad carefully thought about what to plant, where to plant it and when each part of the garden would come to life. Different flowers, trees and colours appear at different times, meaning there is always something new to look forward to as the seasons change.

And now, being here and watching that thought process unfold in real life is pretty special.

Every few days there seems to be something new — tulips appearing, daffodils opening, blossoms covering the orchard and gardens slowly waking up after winter.

And this spring is shaping up to be a very exciting one at Roseville.

Spring at Roseville Is More Than Just Flowers

While the garden has been busy waking up, we haven’t exactly been sitting around waiting for the flowers to appear.

For the past week, there have been solid mornings of weeding, mulching garden beds and putting new pebbles down on the pathways in the sunken garden.

Then, of course, comes the very important local walk to the coffee shop to catch up with friends.

Although I think they may be more excited to see Toast than us.

We’ve also been tidying up areas that have been a little neglected and preparing for what is shaping up to be some very big months ahead.

And then there is Hamish.

Hamish has recently decided that the Photinia on the other side of the fence is apparently quite delicious. Unfortunately, he has also decided that the quickest way to get to it is to destroy half the fence.

Thankfully, the fence is double-wired, so he can’t actually escape.

But he has certainly done a number on it.

The Months Ahead

We have family and friends visiting over the next few weeks, which we are incredibly excited about.

The days are getting warmer, the garden is changing almost daily and every afternoon the sunset and light around Roseville continue to put on a show.

There is still so much to do.

The list, as always, never seems to end.

But I suppose that is what we signed up for!

The pergola area is next on the list to be finished, and hopefully, the newly planted front garden will soon start showing some signs of the vision we have had in our heads.

The veggie garden is happening.

And apparently, according to Jaime, the Bobcat project will also happen — just as soon as he has time to get it going.

This is something he has been talking about since a few months before we even arrived, so we will believe it when we see it. The poor guy has so much else going on!

Every day brings something new, and although the list is long, things are slowly getting done.

We also have some beautiful photoshoots coming up with an amazing local photographer Claire, the New England Garden Festival, and a few other exciting things quietly happening behind the scenes.

Spring is arriving at Roseville.

And it feels like there is a lot more than the garden waking up.
